Benton County Sheriff’s Office Names New K-9 Ragnar

Benton County Sheriff’s Office’s newest recruit officially has a name.

The 1-year-old black German shepherd from Slovakia will be named Ragnar, according to Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck.

In December, the Sheriff’s Office asked for name suggestions for the dog. His Slovakian name was “Hoky,” pronounced “hockey.” In the first 10 days following the announcement, the Sheriff’s Office received more than 1,200 suggestions for names, with more than 600 unique names.

Benton County Sheriff’s Office has a new K-9, which will begin his training in January 2017.
“The response we received from the public was overwhelming,” Heck stated in a news release issued Friday.

Three people suggested the name “Ragnar” and the Sheriff’s Office is now in the process of notifying the “lucky person who will have the chance to meet Ragnar and his handler,” the release states.

Ragnar will soon begin a four-month training course to learn skills of agility, handler protection, obedience, bite work, searches, tracking and how to recognize and alert to narcotics.

“If all goes well, Ragnar should be ready to go by this summer and will probably make his first appearance at the Benton County Fair,” the release states.
